  • The introduction shows more about the village and doesn't reveal anything about what the lottery could be

  • "Mr. Summers, who had time and energy to devote to civic activities. He was a round-faced, jovial man and he ran the coal business."

  • Initial Incident
  • The initial incident of the story is when Mr. Summers brings out the stool and box full of papers.
  • "Mr. Summers set the black box down on it. The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool.
  • "Clyde Dunbar, that's right he broke his leg,hasn't he? Who's drawing for him?"

  • The rising action is when Mr. Summers starts reaching around the box where there are multiple slips of paper, he also grabs a slip with the name Clyde Dunbar.

  • The Climax of the story is when Mr. Summer's starts calling the heads of families and after he is finished he hands them all papers. Everyone starts to wonder who has the slip of paper that'll get them the lottery.

  • The resolution of the story is when the Hutchison kids have to pull out the papers, and after being drawn and opened, Tessie is chosen.

  • The Denouement of the story is when Tessie gets chosen for the lottery, she then begs and cries as everyone grabs stones from the pile.
