Storyboard Text

  • In August of 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas had a series of debates over slavery in the US.  The prize they sought was a seat in the senate.
  • Lincoln and Douglas moved around the state fighting their debates. People came from all around from nearby states to watch.
  • The debates attracted tens of thousands of voters and newspaper reporters.
  • Abraham's quote, "A house divided cannot stand," Douglas wanted the states to decide on their own whether or not slavery should prevail. Lincoln believed that all people deserved equal rights.
  • They both didn't end up winning a popular election, Douglas headed back to Washington.
  • The debates ended on October 15, 1858. Even though he lost, the nation saw potential in Abraham Lincoln.
