- Hey. The pope just announced that there is a way we could get salvation.
- Well...we can go in a three-year trip and suffer starvation plus wars! Isn't that a great deal?
- Wow, that's great! What is the way?
- Mom, I'm hungry. We haven't eaten in days.
- Fine, you can eat the shoe we have left.
- During late 11th century in France, Pope Urban launched the first crusade to conquer Jerusalem. To get people to participate, he convinced them that by joining you would achieve eternal salvation when you died. Anti-Islam propaganda was also spread for enthusiasm.
- During the 3-year journey, most people died because of starvation. The conditions were so bad that many people ate their own leather shoes for food. Before they reached Jerusalem, they were able to conquer Nicaea and Antioch.
- Once the crusaders reached Jerusalem after the journey from France, a 7 week siege was started. Once it ended, the crusaders started their bloodbath of Jews and Muslims. By the time they achieved the conquering of Jerusalem, only 10 percent of the crusaders were still alive.
