Why don't I look like that? Why don't boys ever talk to me?
16-year old Anna eagerly downloads social media, as her parents have finally decided she is old enough for it. She decides to get all of the trending apps: instagram, snapchat, tiktok, etc. Excited to explore each and every one of them, Anna begins making her profiles.
After her deep dive into social media, Anna notices herself becoming addicted to her phone. She constantly picks it up, hoping for a notification. In addition, Anna starts comparing herself to others-- not just online, but in person too.
Unhappy with her own appearance and life, Anna wants to change it. She goes shopping looking for so-called "trendy" clothes. After each try on, however, Anna gets progressively more frustrated. She will never look like the models she follows online.
This unhealthy way of thinking throws Ana into a depressive spiral. She can't control her thoughts anymore. The worst part of it all is she can't stop herself from turning to her phone in moments of vulnerability, which just increases her own insecurities.
Deciding not to let her moods control her life anymore, Anna confides in her best friend Elsa. She reveals all her feelings she's been bottling up in a wave of emotions. After doing this, she instantly feels better. Elsa comforts Anna and tries to offer some advice.
Taking Elsa's advice to heart, Anna decides to take a break from social media. Anna's story is one of countless teens struggling with their mental health due to social media. Sadly, these apps have become such an integrated part of society. Even in deleting the apps she may feel left out in certain trends occurring online-- causing her to download the app again and the cycle continues.
