Hello colleagues! Are you guys excited to work with Carrion beetles?
You know it! We want to figure out what mating system they use.
Suzuki: Let's start by placing two males and two females with a carcass.
Suzuki: It looks like the larger male has claimed the carcass!
Colleagues: The males seem to be competing for the carcass!
Colleague 1: The females seem quite fond of the larger male.
Colleague 2: The females are laying their eggs in the meat after mating with the male!
Suzuki: Ok team, let's take the larva and find out who their parents are.
Colleague 1: You got it! I bet the larger male is the father of most of them.
Suzuki: Your hypothesis was correct! The DNA fingerprints indicate the larger male is the father of the majority of the larva.
Colleague 1: This makes sense since the larger male was able to defend the meat and females gravitated toward the meat.
Colleague 2: Agreed! Also, the females size did not seem to impact reproductive success.
Well done team! From these findings we can conclude carrion beetles use resource defense polygyny.
It was a pleasure working will you all!
