  • 1867- Alaska Annexation
  • On October 18th America bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million. People made fun of this decision until gold was found in Klondike River in 1869 and finally became a state on January 3rd, 1959.
  • 1898- Spanish-American War
  • The Spanish-American War started on April 25th and ended December 10th. While the war wasn't bad it ended with Filipino rebels leading a 3 year insurrection
  • 1898- Hawaii Annexation
  • Sugar had created bonds between America and Hawaii but due to American planters trying to dominate the economy and politics caused many problems between the two. With President William McKinley Hawaii was annexed in 1898 and later made a state in 1959
  • 1898- Guam
  • 1898- Puerto RIco
  • 1899- Open Door Policy
  • On June 21st, America sent the USS Charleston to Guam because of the Spanish-American War. When no one answered their attack warning for hours the situation was cleared and America gave them 30 minutes to surrender. Guam surrendered and became a new US territory.
  • On December 10th the end of the Spanish-American War finally came with the Treaty of Paris. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to America, the Philippines were bought for $20 million, and Cuba became a US protectorate.
  • 1899-1900 was when the Open Door Policy was set up which allowed and promoted open trade in China. This circulated mostly among Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Russia by US State of Secretary, John Hay.
