Unimaginable events in one's life can expedite revealing unexpected results. Maya just wants to be a normal, American, high school girl. Unexpected things happen, such as the terrorist attack. This event alone helps reveal that Brian is racist, Phil genuinely likes Maya, and that Maya's parents are more controlling than she once may have thought.
Theme Development #3
Yeah... me and Lisa aren't together anymore.
The bricks with a death threat on them expedited the process of Maya's parents being hesitant towards Maya leaving. Despite them always wanting Maya to stay at home, this action gave them an excuse to give Maya the unexpected result that she would not be able to go to NYU. "I shake my head instinctively. I get it. She's frightened. She's a mom worried for her kid's safety. But nowhere is safe" (14.23).
Thematic Solution
Maya got beat up by Brian simply because of her religion. Brian being one of Phil's friends from football, he's forced to either choose between Maya or Brian. Phil, with no hesitation knows that Maya is more important than the newly proven racist, Brian. It expedites us learning that Phil really is into Maya. "Holding me to his chest, he strokes my hair and kisses the top of my head" (18.47).
When Phil tells Maya that Lisa and him still aren't together, her heart almost skips a beat from excitement. The act of her learning this information causes her to figure out her feelings for Phil, and further want to pursue a romantic relationship with him. "I smile. It's my first truly spontaneous smile since the bombing" (17.78).
I predict that there will be events that happen before the end of the book that reveal that Maya and Phil will date, and possibly go to homecoming. All of the events before where I stopped reading are indicative that Phil and Maya will end up together. Especially with her breaking up with Kareem, it all seems to point in that direction. The scene where Phil rests his head on Maya's thighs is also a factor in my prediction
