The first settlers arrived in Jamestown (1607). There was little preparation which led to many deaths. Most people in the town didn't work so, malnutrition and starvation killed many people.
John Smith arrived in 1608 and forced everyone to work. This made sure that there was enough food for everyone in the village.

Pocahontas, the daughter of Powhatan, united the settlers and the Natives forming an initial alliance. This formed trading between the two groups
