  • The setting of "The Lottery" is outside on a summer day in a seemingly peaceful town, people are gathering. Families gather like the Hutchinsons, Dunbars, and people like Mrs. Delacroix, Mr. Summers, and Mr. Graves. Tessie however, is barely arriving, nearly forgetting that everyone had to meet today. Everyone who has arrived is written down by Mr. Summers as he is the one holding the event.

  • People have gathered to participate in a lottery held annually. Everyone must participate who lives in the town. If someone cannot attend though, someone else will draw for them. However the winner of this "Lottery" will win death which we learn later, but they are all aware of this. The black box is where families will draw papers and the one with a dot will have the family draw and the winner will die.
