"Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start! He was Jones's secret agent all the time. It has been proved by documents which he left behind him and which have only just been discovered."
I thought Snowball was loyal then, but if Napoleon says it is right, it must be right!
Chapter Eight
Comrades! Snowball was merely a coward! We would never lie to you, for your memories are at fault.
Chapter Nine
"I was at his bedside at the very last. And at the end, almost to weak to speak, he whispered in my ear that his sole sorrow was to have passed on before the windmill was finished. 'Forward comrades! Forward in the name of the Rebellion! Long live Animal Farm! Long live Comrade Napoleon!'"
Squealer tells the other animals that Snowball was in league with Jones the entire time. Though they were uncertain, Squealer twisted the story of the Battle of Cowshed in order to back up his claim. He convinced the animals that Snowball, Napoleon's greatest enemy, was their enemy too.
Chapter Ten
I do not think they are following the original ways of Animalism. But if I find the words to protest, they would use the dogs against me, so they must be right.
The pigs told the other animals that Snowball had never received the order of "Animal Hero, First Class." They claimed it was merely a legend spread around and that Snowball had shown cowardice during the battle. Once again, some animals questioned whether it was true or not, yet Squealer was easily able to convince them that their memories were at fault.
The day Boxer was taken away, the animals realized he was being taken to his death. They protested, but Squealer successfully convinced them that they were wrong. He said that the van was originally owned by the Knacker's, but was used by the veterinarian hospital. He said that Boxer died a happy death, even after all the "expensive medicine" Napoleon unhesitantly purchased for him. This reassured the other animals.
The dogs used by Napoleon were also used to get the animals to follow his leadership without question. If the dogs were not used, the animals might have protested. The pigs were able to do what they wanted, walking on two legs, carrying whips, and speaking to humans. The fear of the dogs manipulated the animals into agreeing with the pigs.
