  • Look there is land ahead !!!
  • We have found two islands already and this one is called Haiti.
  • For his first voyage Columbus recruited 105 men and outfitted three caravels: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The expedition started on August 3, 1492 to endure two months of hardship.
  • Finally, on October 12, after 2 months of enormous hardship, Rodrigo de Triana, cried out from the Pinta, that land lay ahead.
  • Columbus thought that he was close to Cathay or better known as China. Instead he found the island of Cuba and later another the Indians called Haiti.
  • Columbus explored Cuba and Haiti. He decides to claim both for the Spanish Monarchy and renamed the latter island Hispaniola.
  • Off Haiti's northwest coast, he lost the Santa Maria to a hurricane and was forced to leave behind forty of his men. With the remains of the ship he had a fort, La Navidad, built for them, while he returned to Spain with the others, to notify the monarchs of his exploits.
  • Back in Spain in March 1493, Columbus was given hero's welcome by the King And Queen, who were them in Barcelona.
