  • "Earl lives next door in Edna's basement, behind the flower boxes Edna paints green each year, behind the dusty geraniums" (Cisneros, 70)
  • "Her father says to be this beautiful is trouble. They are very strict in his religion. They are not supposed to dance. He remembers his sisters and is sad. Then she can't go out. Sally I mean. " (Cisneros, 81)
  • Papa, Mama, Carlos, Kiki, Nenny, EsperanzaEsperanza feels terrible about her home when the nun asks where she lives. The nun made her feel like she was worth absolutely nothing. Esperanza always wanted a much better house but her family does not have enough money.
  • Ruthie, Edna, EarlEsperanza really likes Ruthie. Ruthie acts like a child and Esperanza likes reading to her and spending time with her.
  • Dad, SallySally's dad doesn't believe his daughter is the way she is. She is kept in the house by him because he thinks she will act very rebellious and he knows how obsessed all the boys are with her looks.
