- 1) This part shows when the first school for the deaf was opened. It was called the Connecticut Asylum at Hartford. Alice Cogswell was the first to enroll in it. Most of the people who attended that school were 10 to 51 years of age. Clerc was the head teacher while Gallaudet was the principal.
- Clerc's Job
- 2) This part shows that in 1818 Clerc decided to go off to Washington D.C. to collect support from the congress. He was introduced to president Monroe by the French Ambassador. The president late applauded his work. Clerc was the first deaf person to be in the Connecticut legislature.
- Clercs Education
- 3) Clerc got married to Eliza Crocker Boardman. After having his 1st child he left to France in 1820 and after having a son he took his son with him. He later visited his homeland in the year of 1845 with his other son and that was the last time that Clerc got to see his homeland.
- Clerc teaching of the deaf language
- 4) Clerc taught grade school and helped train teachers and administrators those that are hearing and those that are deaf. Most of the students went off to study something productive. Students and teachers found other schools for them to teach in. He was offered to become principal.
- 5) Clerc had never attended college although he got many degrees for helping teach in the deaf education. He also completed 50 years of teaching and retired at 73 because of his age. He went to Washington D.C. as the guest of honor.
- 6) Clerc was teaching French signs. His students used French signs for their studies. As time passed by the signs began to change from time to time causing the signs to become English signs.
