  • Transcendentalism was a movement dedicated to gaining individualism, idealism, and a divinity for nature. 
  • This social reform allowed for people to have their own ideas and follow their beliefs. 
  • It was also about letting go of the materialistic things and having a greater appreciation of the nature around them.
  • During this time people with mental illness were mistreaded and called ill or insane. 
  • INSANE
  • Dorthea Dix decided that enough is enough and began advocating to raise awareness for mental health. 
  • She traveled to try and bring better treatment for the mentally ill and allow them to be treated in better conditions.
