Transcendentalism was a movement dedicated to gaining individualism, idealism, and a divinity for nature.
This social reform allowed for people to have their own ideas and follow their beliefs.
It was also about letting go of the materialistic things and having a greater appreciation of the nature around them.
During this time people with mental illness were mistreaded and called ill or insane.
INSANE
Dorthea Dix decided that enough is enough and began advocating to raise awareness for mental health.
She traveled to try and bring better treatment for the mentally ill and allow them to be treated in better conditions.
