- Here, take this root. It will protect you from beatings.
- Douglass (left) is very hard-worked and is given horrible working conditions as his slave-owner, Covey (right), is very harsh on his slaves.
- Climax
- That's what you get!
- Douglass suddenly gets very sick and tired and falls to the ground in exhaustion. Covey notices this and is angry and is trying to make Douglass stand back up and get back to work.
- Resolution
- Oh that's Douglass; I won't hit him.
- Douglass runs away from Covey, to his old master, then runs back to Covey, then runs away from Covey again into the woods. In the woods, Douglass meets Sandy, who gives him a magical root that should protect him from getting beat.
- Douglass returns to Covey, however, Covey is about to whip Douglass. The root does not work, although Douglass then takes the opportunity to fight Covey. He ends up winning as Covey is the one bleeding and on the ground when they finish.
- After their fight, Covey is afraid of Douglass and doesn’t beat him anymore.
