Edmond Dantes is happily celebrating his wedding with Mercedes with all of his friends, all the characters meet in this scene.
Edmond Dantes is falsely accused by his friends for a crime he never committed, and spends 14 years in prison. While he was there he met a priest who he befriended. The priest teaches him many things, including where to find the treasure of Monte Cristo.
After Edmond escapes Château d’If, he retrieves the treasure of Monte Cristo, and assumes the title of The Count of Monte Cristo. He then heads to Paris to get vengeance on those who betrayed him.
The Count of Monte Cristo reveals to Villefort that he is in fact Edmond Dantes, the man he sent to prison. After having all his family murdered by his wife and being framed in the same day, he went insane.
After Monte Cristo saves Maximilian from suicide, he convinces him to delay his death by one month. Monte Cristo had built a plan to save Maximilian and reunite him with Valentine on the island of Monte Cristo.
After teaching Maximilian that he still has so much to live for, he reunites him with Valentine. Monte Cristo finds that he loves Haydée, his slave. They both part ways in a happy ending, not knowing if they will ever see each other again. With Edmond's mission complete, he is content.
