  • You can't tax us!!
  • Life on the farm for colonists included feeding animals, clearing land, etc. They had small, one room houses with built in beds and a fireplace for cooking and warmth. Colonist's economy on the farm was based on farming, handcrafting, and buying and selling goods!
  • Boston Massacre
  • The colonies were democratic. Only white, land-owning men over 21 were able to vote. General assemblies were elected by colonists to make laws and colonial governors were chosen by the king and could overrule assemblies. 
  • Tea Act
  • In 1765, Parliament needed money, so they created the Stamp Act. A rule that taxed all printed items. The colonists were not happy, so they organized the Stamp Act Congress to discuss their rights. The Stamp Act Congress decided not to give consent to any taxes.
  • The Declaration Of Independence
  • On March 5, 1770, British Soldiers were guarding the Boston customs house. An angry mob of colonists started throwing snowballs and rocks at the soldiers. The soldiers fired their guns, killing five colonists.
  • In 1773, Parliament repealed the Townshend Acts but kept the tax on tea. Colonists could only buy tea from the British East India Company. This resulted in the Boston Tea Party, which was when the Sons of Liberty dumped all of the tea they bought from the British into Great Britian's harbor.
  • On July 4th, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met to adopt the Declaration of Independence. The document stated that the 13 colonies were no longer under British parental rule. It additionally listed all the grievances the colonies had against Great Britain.
