  • In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry was sent under the US Navy to end Japanese isolation and open trade with them.
  • Matthew Perry asked the shogun (who were ruling at the time) to open up Japan but the shogun said they wanted to stay in isolation and wanted Perry to get out of the country.
  • The Americans began a war which they were leading but then the Japanese over through the shogun, started trade and opened Japan up.
  • Then emperor Meiji replaced the shogun and took control or Japan
  • Meiji sent students to industrialised countries to learn their machines, skills and methods
  • The Americans got rid of the Samurai class and swords and implemented guns into there society
