  • Hey everyone! Welcome to ProteinCamel Channel where your favourite superstar (me aka LeBrun Jahames) will be teaching you the basics of protein synthesis! Let's start off with the first step!
  • Let's meet my colleague here (totally didn't pay it). It's name is the RNA Polymerase. It works harder than anything or anyone I know to be honest. Reading the DNA and undoing the DNA strand. Great work!
  • Spliceosome
  •
  •
  • RNA Polymerase
  • Awh man, I do all the work taking all the introns out and keep the extrons and yet the polymerase gets all the shine
  • Nucleus
  • The RNA Polymerase unwinds the DNA and starts reading from the TATA box (promoter) all the way to the termination sequence. This is called initiation.
  •
  • TATATACGCATCGA
  • Once it's done the mRNA (codon that was made from the RNA polymerase) is ready to go and bind to itself or another protein, but wait! We need to protect it before it enters the cytoplasm and leaves the nucleus.
  • Once the RNA Polymerase reads through the DNA, it starts to create an coding strand, called the mRNA which is the opposite of what it is reading. This is called elongation.

  • How will our mRNA stay safe from being damaged? Well there are such things as poly-A tail and 5'cap. In poly-A tail, around 50-250 adenine are added to one end of the tail (specifically 3' tail) and 7 guanine on the 5' tail called the 5'cap.
  • 7 Guanine

  • 3'
  • 230 Adenine
  • What if something interferes with the mRNA? Well thats where our buddy splicesome comes into the play. Removing introns and keeping extrons to create the mature mRNA.
  • Im going to take the extrons out of the introns
  • Great! On the next episode, we will see how this mRNA turns into proteins! We will see you next time on the ProteinCamel Channel
  • There all done, this is the mature mRNA ready to go to the ribosome! With the poly-A-tail and 5'cap!
