- Douglass is a slave who has been working for most of his life. His mom was separated from him. he is at a plantation with mr. covey who is obsessed with whipping slaves.
- Frederick was working with bill, eli, and william for fanning wheat when he fell to the ground because of the heat. mr covey heard the fan stop and he rushed over to see what happened. Douglass was trying to crawl to shade.
- covey asks douglass to get up but he can't. He asks again. After douglass doesn't get up, he hits his head causing blood to run out.
- Frederick ran into the woods after attempted to be whipped by mr covey and met someone called sandy. Sandy said that he should go back but to take a root that would make it so that no white man could whip him.
- douglass returns to the plantation and the first day he was there, he was fine and did not try to get whipped, the next day, covey tried to whip him but he took control and fought back. after that, no white man tried to whip him.
- Douglass was a slave who used to get beaten up and now he doesn't get beaten up without a fight. he later escapes the plantation and becomes a successful author and whites a book about him being a slave.
