Yes! We are finally recognized as a University. What a great success!
In 1857 Edward Miner Gallaudet founded Columbia Institution for the Deaf and Dumb.
In October of 1986 Gallaudet was granted University status by the United States Congress.
Gallaudet University became the first University in the world made strictly for people who are deaf and heard of hearing.
Gallaudet University is so crucial to deaf and heard of hearing community because now they can come together and get an education with other deaf or heard of hearing people just like them and learn and grow together.
Sadly, Edward Miner Gallaudet has passed away on September 26th, 1917.
However, his legacy and everything he worked towards is still here today. Gallaudet university is still open for deaf and heard of hearing community as well as hearing people who are fluent in ASL and want to learn using ASL.
