  • Man vs self. In Chapter 1, Equality got picked to be a street sweeper when he really wanted to be a teacher, the council tell you what job you get and Equality told us how he felt by saying, "We felt the cords of our neck grow tight as our head rose higher to look upon the faces of the Council, and we were happy. We knew we had been guilty, but now we had a way to atone for it. We would accept our Life Mandate, and we would work for our brothers, gladly and willingly, and we would erase our sin against them, which they did not know, but we knew." (Rand 8) Equality was very disappointed about not being a scholar but has no choice other than to do what he is told so he can not show any emotion about it.

  • Man vs self. In Chapter 2, Equality goes back to the house of street sweepers only to realize his brothers are all scared when he says, "And a word steals into our mind, as we look upon our brothers, and that word is fear. There is fear hanging in the air of the sleeping halls, and in the air of the streets. Fear walks through the City, fear without name, without shape. All men feel it and none dare to speak." (Rand 19) Equality is starting to realize that everyone is motivated by fear. He is starting to question society and what is happening.

  • Man vs Nature. In Chapter 3, Equality starts telling us how he does experiments in the tunnel from the unmentionable times when he says, "One night, we were cutting open the body of a dead frog when we saw its leg jerking. It was dead, yet it moved. Some power unknown to men was making it move. We could not understand it. Then, after many tests, we found the answer." (Rand 23) He was experimenting and found something that he has never seen or heard of before in his tunnel.

  • Man vs Society. In chapter 4,People are not allowed to notice or do anything with the opposite gender, Liberty goes over to Equality and talks to him about what she sees him as when she says, “Nor do we call you Equality 7-2521 when we think of you” (Rand 25). Equality and Liberty are both risking themselves to punishment for talking to each other but they are both willing to risk it which is why it is so special,
  • Man vs Society. In chapter 5, People are not allowed to have secrets, Equality has a secret and it is that he found a light bulb, Equality tells us how important the light bulb is to him by saying, “For this wire is a part of our body, as a vein torn from us, glowing with our blood. Are we proud of this thread of metal, or of our hands which made it, or is there a line to divide these two?” (Rand 28). The light bulb means everything to him and he is willing to risk himself to find things out about things he is figuring out and finding
  • Man vs Man. In chapter 6, Equality gets whipped by the punishers for not telling them where he was, Equality proves to us that no matter what happened to him he protected the light/ his secret by saying, “But we could not move our body. Then we smiled, for we thought of the light and that we had not betrayed it.” (Rand 30) Equality did not let anyone find out about his secrets, he proved that he really would rather hurt him than his light bulb.
