The Intolerable Acts: After the Boston Tea Party, Great Britain responded by closing Boston ports which affected merchants who relied on trade. British soldiers were also sent to monitor Boston.

In July of 1776, each colony sent delegates to gather in Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson had drafted a "Declaration of Independence", basing it off of enlightenment thinker; John Locke's ideas. After revising this document, each member of the Continental Congress signed it in August of 1776.
