Manuel was walking to school one morning. The teacher asked the students if anybody wanted to volunteer for the talent show. Manuel raised his hand he asked himself ''Why did I raise my hand'' but in his heart he knew the answer. Manuel wanted to impress the girl especially Petra Lopez the 2nd prettiest girl in the class. The fist prettiest girl in the class was taken by his friend Ernie.
''Are you ready'' Mr Roybal asked. ''Yeah..'' Mr. Roybal announced that Manuel Gomez a fith grader at Mrs. Knight's class was going to sing La Bamba by Ritchie Valens. Everyone roared with applause. He imagined his brother and mother cheering loudly but his brothers and sisters not that much. Manuel walked on stage and the song started.''What am I doing here''. ''This is no fun at all'' Manurl did a little dance move and then he heard applause. He did another dance move and he heard more applause,He started singing''Para bailar La Bamba'' again and again.
Manuel could'nt believe his bad luck. Everybody was laughing and stand up their chairs. He was stuck saying the same words over and over again ''Para bailar la bamba'' it was the most embarsssing moment of his life. Manuel stood their trying not to cry. Benny his friend, did a fantastic job of playing the trumpet so he is jealous because he sounded great. After the talent show everyone talked about how funny,crazy and hilarious he was.
Gary Soto is a Mexican-American, he worked on the fields when he was young. Soto's father died in 1957 and Soto was 5 years old. Soto had an interest in poetry when he was at high school. Soto attended Fresno City College and California State University,Fresno,where he got his B.A degree in English in 1974 studying with poet Philip Lavine.
