  • Black Wall Street Before the Massacre
  • Welcome to Black Wall Street!
  • Black Wall Street After the Massacre
  • Oh no! We're doomed! What do we do?
  • There is hope! We can rebuild. We won't give up
  • Redlining
  • Black Wall Street was thriving! It was a community of necessity for black people. It was the only place where black people could shop. It had many places to go, shops to buy at, and restaurants to eat at.
  • Urban Renewal
  • People died and left the community. The businesses were destroyed. The obstacles to rebuilding were fire ordinances, lack of support from the city. The city restricted materials needed to rebuild. Black Tulsans couldn't get access to the justice system, as well as having problems with fire insurance. People still fought against the city and won. Greenwood was rebuilt against the odds.
  • Rebuilding
  • Redlining was an American policy that helped white Americans get home loans. It negatively impacted Black Tulsans. Thirty-five percent of Tulsa, including parts of the historic Greenwood District, was redlined. This made it almost impossible for Black Tulsans to get a home loan.
  • Gentrification of Greenwood
  • The City of Tulsa demolished about 150 acres of Greenwood to build a highway. In the Greenwood district, only a few businesses remain. There is only a block left of what used to be.
  • New businesses are being built including a bank, a museum, and a restaurant. There are four groups helping to rebuild Greenwood. The Black Business owners are worried as their rent is going up. The Chamber of Commerce owns 10 brick buildings, the City of Tulsa is creating programs for Black-owned businesses, and the Tulsa Development Authority recently sold 6 good pieces of land.
  • Gentrification is when wealthier people come into a neighborhood and improves it. The gentrification of Greenwood is benefiting some Black Tulsans, but Black business owner's rent is increasing. This is causing businesses to shut down.
