- Frederick had been sent to Mr. Freelands to work, after he was sent to a breakers. He realizes how unfair slavery is and knows about abolishing slavery from reading. As he sat in his cold, damp shed he was thinking about the consequences of escaping. The cold crisp winter air of January blew into his shed and sent chills down his t shirt; which he had owned since last May. Henry and John were the other leaders planning to escape tomorrow and Frederick was sure they were just as nervous. A slave master that Frederick knew called William Hamilton had some canoes so they would be getting the canoes from him. It would be a excruciating trip down the Chesapeake Bay but they would finally be free of the harsh fields of slavery.
- Last summer Frederick opened a school for slaves to learn to read, and two slaves Henry and John helped to keep the school running and also plan the escape. “If you are interested in EOTCB please meet after class is over” John announced. EOTCB was the slaves code name for escaping on the Chesapeake Bay. “William Hamilton has lent us some kanoes to help us row down the Chesapeake Bay” Frederick whispered at the after class meeting. “We will escape January 22 in the morning directly after breakfast” Henry added. “I will deliver your protections the night before so be on the lookout.” Frederick was laying on his corn sack remembering the conversation until he finally fell asleep.
- All the slaves were out in the field on the morning of the escape just like any day. Frederick approached Sandy as a worrying look grew on his friends face. “We have been betrayed Mr. Freeland knows everything” Sandy said in a rush so no one would see. Fredrick heart sunk as he realized his plan had been crushed. He slowly walked up the hill for breakfast dreading what was about to happen. Despite the fish and eggs on his plate Frederick couldn't eat as his anger and worryness filled him up. “Frederick come outside” Mr.Freeland bellowed into the breakfast hall, Fredericks world seemed to stop.
