  • Captain John Smith, an English soldier, became the leader of the settlement.
  • Economic
  • Fire, drought, Indian attacks, diseases and starvation took heavy toll. Hundreds died during the winter of 1609-1610. Theis period became know as the "Starving time."
  • 
  • The location of the settlement was on a peninsula. It made it easier to defend, but the land was swampy. The swamp bred disease-carrying mosquitoes, and the drinking water was impure.
  • The settlers spent more time looking for gold and silver instead of planting crops.
