We are getting ready to set sail with captain John Paul Jones on the Bonhomme Richard, with the rest of his fleet behind us. We are going to give the Americans support but it will take a while to get there.
Captain! There is a British ship coming towards us!
It is now about midnight, and we haven't seen any British personnel in the ocean. A lot of us are now going below deck to sleep for the night. My job is to stay above deck and watch for British ships or anything else important.
I have not yet begun to fight!
Has your ship struck?
The next day, when I awoke from the sleeping quarters, we were caught in a rainstorm. The storm was tough for us to get through, because the ship was always rocking from side to side, and I lost my balance a few times.
After the Battle
Later that day, I saw a British ship coming straight towards us I had to warn Captain John Paul Jones! When we engaged with the Serapis, they hit us hard and left us with only three guns. Then, we hit them and they had four guns left.
Our ships got stuck together after Captain John Paul Jones rammed the Serapis. I saw an opportunity to take out the Serapis, so I climbed the sail rope and threw a grenade into the Serapis' powder keg. That blew up the inside of the ship and we won.
After the fight, we took the Serpis to New York to get it repaired because the Bonhomme Richard sank after we won the battle. The Serapis is now ours and we will use it against the British.
