  • In the middle of the 17th century , the French Colony in Saint Dominique started investing in sugar. In order for this much sugar production they had lots of slaves
  • Sugar!
  • 90% of the population were slaves!
  • When the French Revolution broke out, no one in the four groups liked it. As a result the government wanted to improve the slaves living conditions by creating The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen.
  • The four groups at this time were;1.) Great Blancs2.) Free People of Color3.) Petit Blancs4.) Slaves
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen
  • Hey! This isn't fair! Lets fight!
  • However, Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality was only growing in France. This was upsetting to the petit blancs. This lead to them fighting between them and the newly French free people of color.
  • A huge Slave Revolt broke out by August of 1791. This revolt of lead by a former slave named Toussaint L'Ouverture. L'Ouverture was a very skilled leader and brought together a discipline army.
  • The Spanish also joined in to help fight with the slaves and offered them lots of help. Later, L'Ouverture allied with France due to them ending slavery. Doing this helped the slaves have the most successful slave revolt in human history. However even though slavery had ended, plantations still continued for the best of the people.

  • L'Ouverture wrote a new constitution, however, Saint Domingue was still a part of France, which means Napoleon was about to rule the place. In 1799, Napoleon gained his power in France in a coup and reinstated slavery. After some time Napoleon's brother-in-law, Leclerc, tried to take guns away from the former slaves, which resulted in a guerrilla war. The French knew that they were defeated. After this battle, Napoleon gave up on his dream of an American empire and sold Thomas Jefferson Louisianna.
