  • The next day Matilda went to Mme Forestier's house and related her story of distress. Mme Forestier took out a box full of jewelry for Matilda .
  • I really like that diamond necklace, can you lend that to me?
  • Why, yes, certainly.
  • Choose my dear.
  • The day of the ball arrived. Matilda was a great success. She was the prettiest of all. All men noticed her, asked her name, and wanted to be presented. She danced with enthusiasm and had a great time.
  • When Loisel and Matilda reached home Matilda realized that she had lost Mme Forestier's necklace.
  • I no longer have Mme Forestier's necklace!
  • What?! Was it there when we left the minister's house?
  • They searched the road they came from but they couldn't find it. Loisel even went to the police and to the cab offices, and put an advertisement in the newspapers, offering an award but even days later they couldn't find it.
  • They took a loan of eighteen thousand francs and bought a new diamond to replace the necklace. They had to live a poor life for ten years and work very hard to pay off the loan.
  • Good morning, Jeanne
  • Yes I've had some miserable days. I lost the necklace that you lent me and took a loan to buy a new diamond one and it took ten years for us to pay off the loan.
  • One day Matilda saw Mme Forestier passing by. Matilda could not believe that she still looked very young and attractive,. She thought if she hadn't lost the necklace her life might've been different.
  • Oh! My poor Matilda the diamonds on my necklace were false. They weren't even worth five hundred francs.
  • Oh my! Matilda I didn't even recognize you, how have you changed!
