Storyboard Text

  • Texas wanted to become independent from Mexico, and eventually join the U.S. They would call themselves the lone star state. That is what the flag represents. Mexico however did not want this. 
  • The Lone Star State
  • The Mexicans attacked the Alamo for thirteen days, leaving Texans very angry. This battle served as rallying cry for those who supported Texan independence. 
  • Remember the Alamo
  • Sam Houston, one of the leaders for Texan independence, surprised the Mexicans with an attack at San Jacinto. Within 15 minutes they killed 600 Mexicans and captured Santa Anna. In exchange for his life Santa Anna agreed to free Texas in the Treaty of Velasco.

  • The Battle of Palo Alto
  • This battle was a result of arguing over borders of Texas. Texas went ahead and occupied territory Mexico said was theirs, and this caused Mexico to open fire. Mexico lost double the men America lost. This battle led the U.S. to sign a declaration of war.
  • Americans attacked Mexico city, killing or capturing 3,000 while losing only 800. This caused Mexico to surrender, and US finally won the war.
  • Entrance Into Mexico City
  • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war, set the southern boundary of Texas and ceded the Mexican Territories of New Mexico and California to the US. The US paid mexico many millions, and guaranteed and Mexicans living in their territory freedom and rights. The US also acquired many miles of land and emerged as a world power.
