  • ...But O heart! heart! heart! O the bleeding drops of red, Where on the deck my Captain lies,  Fallen cold and dead. 
  • The author of this poem uses suspense and repetition. All the stanza end with the same thing in all 3. There is suspense in the poem because you never know what is going to happen next. 
  • The narrator talks in a past tense tone, the theme is about a passed loved one, in this case the President.
