  • So, this is love...
  • I spoil you too much! You should start working!
  • This isn't true love...
  • Come with me, and you'll have a great future ahead.
  • I'll have to think about it!
  • The story begins when Janie Crawford, the protagonist of the novel, comes back to Eatonville. She tells her best friend, Pheoby Watson, what she has done in the last years. Janie starts by remembering her early life. She tells her of when she was lying under a pear tree and sees a bee pollinating a pear blossom. She describes this as a sexual experience that motivates her to find love.
  • You made me feel lonely and never gave me the chance to love you truly!
  • After Janie determines she wants to find love, she notices a boy named Johnny Taylor. When One day Nanny, Janie's grandmother, sees Janie kissing Johnny outside of her house. Angrily, Nanny tells her she is a woman now and needs to get married. Nanny tells her to marry Logan Killicks, an older and wealthier man, so she has a better life. After they get married, Logan tells Janie she should start working. By this time she knows this isn't true love.
  • I think women can do whatever men can do!
  • One day, Logan leaves town and Janie meets a man named Joe Starks. Joe wants to make Janie a proper lady, so he offers her to come with him to a town completely made up of black people. He wants to invest in this town and get rich. Before Joe leaves, Janie asks Logan what he would do if she ran away and he says it wouldn't matter since no man would want her. Janie runs off with Logan the next day and they get married in Green Cove Springs.
  • Thank you for allowing me to love.
  • When Janie and Joe arrive at Eatonville, Joe decides to become mayor. Joe then builds a store for the town and puts Janie in charge of it. After Joe realizes that the men praise Janie for her hair, he orders her to keep it in a head rag. When Janie tries to stand up to him, Joe beats and silences her. Joe gets very sick and is set to die. Before he dies, Janie works up the nerve to tell him he never gave her the chance to love him truly.
  • After Joe dies, many men in town want to take advantage of Janie, but she doesn't get close to men because she loves her freedom. One day when Janie is working in the store, she meets a man named Tea Cake. She learns he has high opinions of women. Janie feels comfortable around him and like she has known him her whole life. After going out for a while, Tea Cake declares his love to her but Janie is doubtful. Janie finally makes up her mind and wants to start a life with him.
  • Janie and Tea Cake leave Eatonville to start a new life in Jacksonville. After they marry, Tea Cake gets in trouble with Janie's money and they leave to the Everglades. After settling there, a storm arrives. Janie is in danger of a dog with rabies. Tea Cake kills the dog but is bitten. For weeks Tea Cake denies seeing a doctor and loses his mind. Because of rabies, Joe tries to kill Janie but Janie kills him first to save herself. She states she has been to the horizon and back thanks to Tea Cake.
