Storyboard Text

  • It was carnival season in a town in Italy during the year 1846. Montresor is introduced as the narrator. Fortunato is introduced as very drunk and is wearing a jester’s motley. They are both fond of fine wines. Montresor is discussing the wine, Amontillado, with Fortunato. He says he has it in his vaults and wants Fortunato to examine it. Little does Fortunato know, he is planning something much more sinister.
  • Exposition
  • Montresor is seeking revenge on Fortunato because he somehow insulted him. Montresor is very angry with Fortunato and plans on avenging himself for some way he has offended him. We do not know the source of his anger, but we do know that Fortunato has offended Montresor in some way and Montresor relishes in the thought of Fortunato's death.
  • REVENGE!!!
  • Conflict
  • Montresor and Fortunato are continuing to make way down to the catacombs where Montresor is planning on ending Fortunato’s life, although he is oblivious. Fortunato is beginning to cough because of the nitre in the depths of the crypt. Montresor is very attentive when he realizes that Fortunato is coughing a lot. He repeatedly asks Fortunato if he would like to turn back in order to make himself seem innocent.
  • Rising Action
  • As Montresor and Fortunato make it to the deepest part of the catacombs, they find a hole in the wall instead of the Amontillado Fortunato was expecting. Montresor decides to chain Fortunato to the wall. Fortunato is still unaware what is happening since he is still drunk. Montresor has enacted on his revenge at the climax of the story.
  • Climax
  • Once Fortunato is chained up, Montresor uses a trowel he brought to build a wall, trapping Fortunato. The alcohol is noticeably wearing off of Fortunato as he realizes what is happening. Fortunato begins to panic as he comes to the reality of the situation at hand. The two scream at each other as Montresor shuts Fortunato away for good.
  • Falling Action
  • Montresor has successfully carried out his plot of revenge on Fortunato. As he walks away, he can only hear the sound of Fortunato’s hat jangling. He has just added a new set of bones to the crypt in which he declares have not been disturbed in 50 years. He walks out with the words, “In pace requiescat!”
