When Jackson was a soldier, the War of 1812 gave him many new opportunities. He was a major general in Tennessee. After waiting several months for orders from the War Department, finally, in January 1813, Governor Willie Blount of Tennessee told him to reinforce the American troops in New Orleans.

Jackson's Military Career Was Over
However, in the election of 1824, after Jackson had become a dignified country gentleman when the election went to the House of Representatives, Henry Clay used his influence to win John Quincy Adams for the presidency. After Adams won the presidency, he made Clay his secretary of state; this enraged Jackson and his supporters charged that the two men had made a “corrupt bargain.”

Jackson's Second Administration
During Jackson’s second administration, he dealt with the Bank of the United States. He thought the law that had created the bank was unconstitutional. He immediately ordered Secretary of the Treasury Louis McLane to remove the government’s deposits from the Bank of the United States and place them all in-state banks. Mclane and his successor, William J. Duane refused to carry out Jackson’s order.
