- The final scene of Hamlet starts with hamlet preparing to duel against Laertes in what he believes is a simple competition. however, Laertes is actually working with king Claudius to kill hamlet and is armed with a poisoned sword to boot.
- During the fight, Claudius offers hamlet a cup of (also poisoned) wine as a reward for scoring the first blow. hamlet, who is still angry at the king for his role in his father's death and focused on the duel, refuses the kings offer.
- Then queen Gertrude accidently drinks the poisoned wine (despite the kings warning), and offers it to Hamlet, who again refuses. as the fight continues, Laertes lands a hit on Hamlet.
- then, during a scuffle, both combatants drop their weapons, and hamlet ends up with the poisoned sword.
- hamlet then wounds Laertes with his own sword. At the same time, the poisoned wine takes effect, and the queen collapses.
- At first, hamlet thinks that the queen has fainted out of shock from seeing him hurt. but when she uses her last breath to warn hamlet that she has been poisoned, hamlet orders everyone to drop everything and find the traitor.
