  • Hey! You seem like a smart guy. Have you ever heard of the Endosymbiotic Theory.
  • Yes, I have! The theory is about how there were 3 types of prokaryote cells. Some made their own food from the sun, some used oxygen to create energy, and others consumed other prokaryotes.
  • How did some prokaryotes consume other prokaryotes?
  • The large prokaryotes engulfed small bacteria which use oxygen to create food. They would then be digested. However, sometimes the bacteria stayed intact inside the large prokaryote cell.
  • What would happen to the consumed bacteria that don't get digested?
  • The undigested bacteria lived together with the large prokaryotic cell.
  • Is that what makes a eukaryotic cell?
  • Yes, exactly! This new symbiotic bacteria and prokaryote was named the first ancestor eukaryote, which couldn't make it's food.
  • The eukaryote cell also sometimes engulfed small bacteria which could perform photosynthesis.
  • Is that the first eukaryotic cell that could create it's own food source?
  • Yes, that right! There is one last thing you need to know. The bacteria which created its own food source from oxygen, has evolved into what we call mitochondria. The bacteria which produces food from the sun light has evolved into chloroplast.
  • Thank you so much, now I know everything about the Endosymbiototc Theory.
