Roz is a robot that has been washed upon an island who was being transported during a hurricane. She has to survive in the wilderness, and as she stands, a pinecone hits her in the head. Later, she runs into a cave for cover against the pincecones, but runs into some bears instead. She is in a chase, so to take cover and springs onto a tree,
Roz is then climbing on rocks, but then something horrifying happens. She and the rocks both fall, smashing a goose nest and all its eggs. Or so she thought. She soon heard a "Mama! Mama!" coming from an egg that was stuck in the mud and she thought she could possibly salvage it. She comes to Loudwing, an elder goose, to ask for advice. She tells her what happened, and Loudwing tells Roz to feed the hatchling and name it. She names the hatchling Brightbill, and feeds him a grass mound.
Roz and Brightbill watched the beavers wade in the water, adding twigs and tree branches to their dam, which gave her an idea. She chops down a tree as a gift for the beavers, and she asks if Mr. Beaver could help her build a nest for Brightbill and her. He agrees if she brings them 4 healthy trees, and so she does. Mr. Beaver then helps Roz build a large dome with a vent for fire smoke at the top. Roz then names it The Nest. During the winter, many animals freeze, so Roz invites animals into The Nest.
During the winter, Brightbill had to migrate since it was getting colder. He would be back next spring, so Roz invites some animals into the Nest for warmth. Soon, she has to build 3 more Nests because more animals keep coming. They all tell stories to each other for entertainment, as Roz builds the Nests.
Later, a fire breaks out in one of the Nests. In the lodge, a child hare is in there and it's mother is screaming for help. Roz comes to the rescue and saves the hare, with the mother thanking her. They then all tell stories of wisdom to survive winter, or parenting skills. The animals and Roz do this for the whole winter, until Brightbill comes back. Soon winter is over, and spring is back.
During the spring, Brightbill tells Roz his story of migration. He tells Roz they find a greenhouse to stay in, where a cat lives, but doesn't tell on them. Soon after a while though, a human finds them and shoots the leader goose, Longneck. Without the leader, they could not go anywhere. So, they all vote Brightbill to be the leader of the flock. The weather had turned them around, so they didn't know where to go. Brightbill didn't know what to do, so he repeated what Longneck said, "We are geese, and geese keep going!". They knew they were all off course when they saw the ocean, but it was a little warmer near the coastline so he followed it and made it home.
