  • Introduction
  • Good morning learners. Today we are going to learn about addition and subtraction.
  • as
  • Addition and subtraction + _
  • Grade 1
  • What is addition and subtraction? Can you show me addition or subtraction using your counters?
  • key question
  • Subtracting is when we take away numbers
  • Principle 1:Prior knowledge
  • What is addition? What is subtraction?can you add and subtract numbers? Let us add and subtract numbers using counters
  • When we add, we put things together
  • Competencies-Communication-critical thinking
  • Engaging with new content phase
  • Onalerone, what other example do you want us to do?
  • 3+2=5
  • 3+3=6
  • -Addition is a process whereby one adds on to something or it can mean finding the total sum of two combined numbers. E.g.1+1-Subtraction is a process whereby one takes away from something.
  • Principle 3: Cognitive engagement and practicePrinciple 2: Memory and learning
  • 4-2=2
  • 4-1=3
  • cold calling
  • Grade 1 Mathematics lesson on addition and subtraction. Objectives: Learners should be able to: Demonstrate addition and subtraction sums using physical objectsDescribe the process of adding and subtracting numbers (using objects).Present addition and subtraction sums using depictions.
  • Principle 3: cognitive engagement and practicePrinciple 7: Meta-cognition (learners thinking about their learning process)
  • Well done learners!
  • 6-2=4
  • Its your turn to practice
  • 4+3=7
  • I added 4 and 3 and the total is 7.4+3=7
  • Learners will be asked open-ended questions to elicit their prior knowledge.
  • Competencies-collaboration-critical thinking-communication
  • 2+1=3
  • come up with your examples and demonstrate them in your groups.
  • 3-1=2
  • The teacher explains and demonstrates addition and subtraction while engaging learners. NB! We start with addition examples then demonstrate. Followed by subtraction examples and then learners demonstrate on their own.
  • Addition
  • We are going to play the figure it out game. In this game you will get a equation card. What you have to do is to figure out the sum(answer) and then decide if it is subtraction or addition.
  • Figure it out game
  • Subtraction
  • Learners will demonstrate addition and subtraction on their boards. The teacher will be going around monitoring all they are doing and asking them to share with the rest of the class what they did. NB!! We start with addition then demonstrate. Then we do subtraction then demonstrate.
  • Mpho, explain to us what you did on your white board
  • 2+2=4
  • Competencies-communication-Critical thinking
  • Learners work in groups to demonstrate addition and subtraction sums using themselves as objects.
  • Principle 5: Attention and thinking
  • Consolidation phaseprinciples: Principle 7: Metacognition (they will be thinking about what they have learned as they figure out the operation)Principle 6: Cognition and emotion
