  • Sampson and Gregory meet at the town market and discuss the Motagues and how they will not stand to be insulted.
  • Gregory, on my word, we'll not carry coals.
  • No, for then we should be colliers.
  • Gregory plan to bite his thumb (this is a large insult at the time) at Abraham, a Montague as he walks by. Gregory and Sampson intend to draw Abram into a fight because of their hatred of the Montagues.
  • I will frown as I pass by, and let them take it as they list.
  • Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them, if they bear it.
  • Abraham notices Sampson biting his thumb which Sampson denies doing towards him. The two begin to talk and
  • Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
  • No, but I do bite my thumb.
  • After talking for a bit. Samson and Abraham draw their swords and prepare to fight. When the fighting commences Tybalt (A Capulet) and Benvolio (Montague) arrive. Benvolio tries to stop the fighting but Tybalt takes the opportunity to enter the fray.
  • Draw, if you be men. Gregory, remember thy swashing blow.
  • Down with the Capulets! Down with the Montagues!
  • As more Capulets and Montagues rush to the battle the citizens begin to chant disapprovingly at the two houses. Finally and officer arrives and tries to beak up the fighting.
  • Clubs, bills, partisans! Strike! Beat them down!
  • The prince arrives with soldiers and breaks up the fighting. He threatens both Montagues and Capulets with execution if there is any more fighting.
  • Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace,Profaners of this neighbor-stainèd steel .Will they not hear? What, ho! You men, you beastsThat quench the fire of your pernicious rage with purple fountains issueing from your vains!
