Storyboard Text

  • Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7th, 1941. This surprise attack set off a chain of events that would ultimately force the United States to join the Allies and declare war on the Axis powers. Following the Japanese attack, Japanese-Americans saw a dramatic increase in racial tension at home
  • On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066. Anyone and all can be excluded as deemed necessary or desirable. This also says the war requires every possible protection against espionage and against sabotage.
  • On March 2, 1242, They evacuated Japanese Americans,first reported to “assembly centers,” in California, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona. Desperate to find areas large enough to house so many evacuees, the government utilized existing facilities for the assembly centers.
  • The War Relocation Authority made centers in the harshest, most desolate places, in areas of California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, and Arkansas.Each camp held between ten and eleven thousand people.
  • A camp consisted of blocks of 12 to 14 wooden barracks, about 20 feet tall, 100 feet wide, and 120 feet long, covered with tar paper. Each of the barracks was divided into one-room apartments for people to live in.
  • Japanese American attempted to makelife as easy as possible for themselves. People tried to improve their lives as much as they could. They established schools tried to get jobs within the camps, created music and art groups, started newspapers, and held religious services—anything they could do to makelife in the camps bearable and establish a sense of community.
