Storyboard Text

  • There were four main battles in the Civil War. They are called The Firing at Fort Sumter, The Battle of Antietam, The Battle of Gettysburg and the Siege at Vicksburg.
  • The Firing at Fort Sumter was the battle that started the Civil War. Confederate troops surrounded Fort Sumter. On April 12, 1861, Confederate guns open fired on Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter surrendered after 34 hours of cannon blasts 
  • The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most known battles of the Civil War. A Confederate General, General Lee, invaded the North and was met by the Union army at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. General Lee's army surrendered after 3 days of fighting.
  • The Battle of Antietam was fought near Sharpsburg, Maryland. This battle was the first major battle fought on Northern territory. The fighting was so intense that it ended up being the bloodiest battle in all of history. The number of casualties was 23,000.
  • The Siege at Vicksburg was when the North captured the Confederate stronghold in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Siege of Vicksburg gave the Union control of the Mississippi river. When they gained control of the river, it cut off the Confederates' ability to transport goods which caused economic consequences in the South.
  • These were four major battles in that took place in the Civil War.
