In the Battle of Vicksburg the Union gained control of the Mississippi River. General Grant attacked/sieges Vicksburg, The confederates resisted for 48 days. But the confederates ended up running out of supplies and surrendered. This union victory gave them control of the Mississippi River.

The battle of Petersburg took out some of the confederate army but also gave the Union control of the Gulf of Mexico. It was a 10-month-long siege. Eventually, during the 10-month-long siege general, Lee issued an evacuation of Petersburg. They had run out of all supplies. This was a Union victory.
