After not being successful in the northern colonies the British moved to the south where they believed they would have many loyalists to aid them in the war.

Clinton began the battle in the south by taking over many states like Georgia, and North, and South Carolina.

After taking over those states Clinton left back to New York, leaving Cornwallis in charge of all of the British forces in the South.

After numerous Guerilla attacks, and attacks from General Greene's army Cornwallis and his army finally decided rest at Yorktown.
General Washington, after receiving many troops from the French army snuck up on the British and took the first shot of the battle of Yorktown on October 6th, 1781. By this time french Warships had shown up in Chesapeake bay blocking any escape, Cornwallis could have to the sea.
After much waiting, Cornwallis eventually surrendered as he realized he wouldn't be getting saved by the British Navy.
