  • What Is the Battle of Marathon?
  • The great Battle of Marathon was a battle between the Persian army and the Athenian Army which was fought at the plains of Marathon near Athens.
  • FOR PERSIA!!!!
  • FOR ATHENS!!!!
  • Unfortunately, the Athenian army was greatly outnumbered, so they sent one of their famous runners, Pheidippides, to Sparta to ask for help. However, the Spartans were in the middle of an important religious festival, and could not send troops for several days.
  • Outnumbered...
  • When the Persians Cavalry was away they took their chance and attacked the Persian army and won! In the end, the greeks only lost 192 men while Persians lost 6,400 men.
  • We Persians are 15,000, there is no way they can beat us.
  • We Athenians are only 11,000, we need the Spartans to help us beat them.
  • A religious festival was the reason why Sparta couldn't send troops to the war because Sparta had an important festival, the festival was the Carniea festival this celebration was in honor of Apollo the Greek god.
  • When the Spartans came they helped the Athenian army fight and plan for their attack against the Persians.
