- Gather around children, I'm about to tell you the story of how the First Battle of Bull Run started..
- As i recall, it started around July 21, 1861 in Prince William County, Virginia, just north of the city of Manassas and about 30 miles west-southwest of Washington, D.C
- The Union and the Confederates were at war with each other, General Ivrin McDowell lead the Union and General Pierre G.T. Beauregard led the Confederate army.
- The First Manassas or Bull Run resulted in thousands of lives lost and is referred to as the first major land battle of the American Civil war.
- The battle resulted in a win for the Confederate army followed by a disorganized retreat by the Union Army.
- Its outcome sent northerners who had expected a quick, decisive victory reeling, and gave rejoicing southerners a false hope that they themselves could pull off a swift victory.
