  • That is why, in the 1920s, he worked on a first small commercial airline that began carrying mail and expanded aircraft speed and range, allowing for the first nonstop flights across the world's oceans, poles, and continents. However, due to a lack of equipment and machinery in this country, flying in the 1920s was an unpleasant experience for passengers because it was extremely noisy and cold, as planes were made of uninsulated metal sheets that shook violently in the wind.
  • Lasaendro became unemployed as a result of the airline's bankruptcy, which caused him to struggle with his expenses and payments for a long time. He wondered if his life would be the same if he had not chosen to emigrate.
  • He later found himself employed as a nobleman's chauffeur and had to abandon his ambitions and career. He discovered the news about Charles Lindbergh, who made history on May 20 and 21, 1927 by being the first pilot to fly solo nonstop across the Atlantic, where the entire world was watching. He was 37 years old at the time and already had a wife and a child. This news set thousands of printing presses in motion, and Dan Hampton explores the world that created Lindbergh's achievement in this excerpt from his new book The Flight.

  • These factors encouraged Lasaendro to resign from his job and use the money he saved to return to his homeland with his family. When he returned, finding work was difficult, and he had to start over. It wasn't until 1930 that he was employed as a pilot because of his extensive experience and expertise in the industry.
  • The success and stability of his life blinded him to the fact that he had a mistress named Ellen Church, who was the world's first female flight attendant and registered nurse, who started flying at the age of 25 on 1930. Even Lasaendro's wife is unaware of their secret relationship. There were between 200 and 300 female flight attendants in airline service by the mid-1930s, with an average tenure of two to three years, owing to age and marriage constraints, while Ellen and Lasaendro's relationship is still hidden.
  • However, Lasaendro was caught after two years of cheating on his wife and divorced. Even at the age of 42, he concentrated on work for the next few years as a result of his separation from his family. During World War II, from 1939 to 1945, aircraft played a critical role, and he returned to being a developer. He develops aircraft in terms of size, weight, speed, fuel, range, and armament. The war saw the peak of piston-engined propeller craft, as well as the introduction of the first jet-powered aircraft capable of higher speeds.
