- Man Vs Man
- "They brought a crate. 'Lie down on it! On your belly!' I obeyed. I no longer felt anything except the lashes of the whip" (Wiesel 57).
- Man Vs Self
- "Around the middle of January, my right foot began to swell from the cold. I went to the infirmary. The doctor, a great Jewish doctor...was categorical: 'We have to operate!'... That was all I needed! But I had no choice" (Wiesel 78).
- Man Vs God
- "For the first time, I felt anger rise within me. Why should I sanctify His name? The Almighty, the eternal and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent. What was there to thank Him for? " (Wiesel 33).
- This is an example of man vs man because Elie was accused of spying on the Kapo so the Kapo took his revenge out on him. He whipped Elie 25 times in the back while Elie was passed out from the pain.
- Man Vs Nature
- "We were outside. The icy wind whipped my face. I was constantly biting my lips so that they wouldn't freeze. All around me, what appeared to be a dance of death" (Wiesel 89).
- This is an example of man vs self because Elie's foot was frostbitten from the cold and he couldn't walk on it. Elie didn't want to have the operation done, but the doctor ended up deciding to do the operation and Elie was happy that the decision was the doctors'.
- Man Vs Society
- "As for Moishe, he wept and pleaded: 'Jews, listen to me! That's all I ask of you. No money. No pity. Just listen to me!' he kept shouting in synagogue. ... Even I did not believe him" (Wiesel 7).
- This is an example of man vs God because Elie was mad that his God wasn't doing anything to save or help the prisoners. Elie didn't want to worship a God who would never help them, even when they needed it most.
- This is an example of man vs nature because Elie was fighting for his life because of the cold. Elie was in a field of dead bodies who chose to give up on any hope of survival.
- This is an example of man vs society because Moishe the Beadle was warning the Jews of what he had gone through and what was going to happen to them if they didn't listen to what he had to say. Even Elie didn't believe him but what Moishe said was true turned out to be true.
