  • April,15,1817
  • 7 students and a passion for learning is all it took
  • we started a school to help people like you and alice
  • Expanding the School
  • So we can help more people
  • The sanction was approved
  • FSL and ASL differences and similarities
  • Clerc and Gallaudet opened their school for the deaf with only 7 students in 1817 with an age range of 10-51. With Gallaudet as principal and Clerc as head teacher he help the students lear signs.
  • Helping More People
  • we were clercs students and wanted to help more people by opening more schools
  • Clerc went to the house of representatives he talked to Henry Clay speaker of the house and Henry liked him and sanctioned Clerc land that he later sold for a lot of money this let the men expand the school for the deaf and further Clercs teaching practices.
  • "Dark Age"
  • Because Clerc is french he learned french sign language and what he taught to the students at the school was french sign langue. There were other inputs that now make up ASL as we know it today the students home signs and the signs of those who lived in Martha's vineyard as most of this islands people are deaf they created there own signs and this was incorporated into the FSL that was being taught at the school creating ASl as we know it today .
  • Deaf Culture
  • Clercs teachings helped so many that many of his graduates opened deaf school all over the country and Quebec to help people like he did they used his teachings and method as well as signs this caused a surge in deaf education and awareness.
  • During the "Dark Age" signing was considered bad and people who were deaf and signed were forced to do speech practices (I AM putting it nicely) this was done by tying the signers hands behind there back and forcing them to speak. Because of this despicable act the signers only signed in secret and tried to speak as much as possible.
  • cool I am hearing but know sign
  • I believe because of the "Dark Age" and ASL legitimate as a language it was only declared a langue in the 1960 less than a 100 years ago. This disputed I believe caused the deaf community to be so proud as they are no longer silenced and can sign freely . But also that hearing people are interested in their language and want to know more about the language and culture.
