  • R.I.PRito de la Serna
  • To honor Datu Lapu-Lapu, the Municipal Council during the term of Rito de la Serna (1929-1933) approved the construction of a monument in his memory. The statue was holding a bow and arrow with the arrow pointing towards the municipal hall.
  • However, coincidental or for some other reasons, just a few weeks after the completion of the statue, de la Serna died. He was then replaced by his nephew.
  • Sadly, de la Serna's nephew, Gregorio de la Serna, also died and was not able to continue his term. After the death of the two de la Sernas, Simeon Amodia took over the position.

  • Mariano Dimataga
  • As though there is a curse, Amodia also met the same fate like the two de la Sernas and died in office in 1937. Due to these deaths, the people began to believe that the statue is causing these demises.
  • In 1938, Mariano Dimataga became the new chief executive of Opon. One of his first projects was to renovate the statue of Lapu-Lapu where the bow and arrow were removed and replaced with a wooden pestle.
  • Some people believe that renovating the monument and removing the bow and arrow effectively stopped the ‘curse’ as Dimataga remained in his position for 30 years until his retirement in 1968.
